The healthy truth: Teens in Elkhart County aren’t drinking, smoking or using drugs. How do we know? Because we asked.

Positively Elkhart County works with 99% of the teens in Elkhart County to challenge perceptions about drug and alcohol use and celebrate the positive choices teens are making.

We survey thousands of students at schools throughout Elkhart County using the Indiana Youth Survey to ask about their behaviors and their perceptions regarding drugs and alcohol. Here’s what they had to say. 

Elkhart County teens aren’t drinking

Alcohol

Although many teens believe their peers are drinking alcohol regularly, we know that’s not the truth. 

ALCOHOL USE IN PAST 30 DAYS

Only 7 percent of middle school students and 12 percent of high school students in Elkhart County said they have used alcohol in the past 30 days.

That means most Elkhart County teens don’t use alcohol.

Marijuana

Most Elkhart County teens have made a commitment to being drug-free and don’t use marijuana.

Only 4 percent of middle school students and 9 percent of high school students in Elkhart County said they have used alcohol in the past 30 days.

That means most Elkhart County teens don’t use marijuana.

Elkhart County teens aren’t smoking

E-Cigarettes

Vaping isn’t cool. Most Elkhart County teens aren’t smoking tobacco in any form, and they don’t want to date someone who is.

E-CIGARETTE/VAPE USE IN PAST 30 DAYS

Only 2 percent of middle school students and 3 percent of high school students in Elkhart County said they have used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days.

That means most Elkhart County teens don’t vape.

Good job, parents! Almost every student said their parents would think it was wrong for them to smoke alcohol. 99% of middle schoolers thought their parents wouldn’t approve, and 96 percent of high schoolers said the same.

Elkhart County teens don’t want their friends to drink alcohol. More than 90 percent of all students believe it is wrong for their friends to drink (98 percent of middle schoolers and 93 percent of high schoolers).
